A Christmas Quiz

TGIF everyone…only 2 more days until Christmas!

This is our family picture in front of our tree before we left Colorado 🙂
I saw this fun holiday survey over at Peanut Butter Fingers a few weeks back and I thought it was such a cute idea and the perfect post for the Friday before Christmas!
Here are the questions and my answers…
25 Questions:
Holiday Style
  • Eggnog or hot chocolate?
Hot chocolate, definitely…eggnog is just gross.
  • Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
He just leaves them under the tree unwrapped! My husband thinks that I’m crazy because Santa wraps all of his presents, but I’m of the school that the presents from your parents come wrapped, and then the presents that Santa just took out of his bag are left unwrapped under the tree. Whenever you see Santa’s bag in movies, usually the toys are all just in there unwrapped, because after all, the elves have to build all those toys, they don’t have time to wrap them too…duh.
  • Colored lights on tree/house or white?
I like them both, it just depends on the look you’re going for. Cam and I have white LED lights for our tree, and I guess my preference is more towards white lights for both indoor and outdoor decorating because it gives a little more of a unified look…but I think the colored can be really fun. It’s good to mix it up.
  • Do you hang mistletoe?
No, not usually…but when we have a house I want to!
  • When do you hang your decorations up?
I would put them up as early as Cam would let me, but he’s a traditionalist and thinks that Christmas stuff should wait until the day after Thanksgiving. (You can see our decorations from this year here)
  • What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
Frosted Sugar Cookies are my favorite Christmas treat…but I really love all Christmas cookies! (If you haven’t figured that out already, check out this post)
  • Favorite holiday memory as a child?
Ooh, that’s a tough one…every Christmas was special, but one memory that sticks out is actually from high school and it was the Christmas that I got a white electric guitar and my sister got an white electric bass! It was so awesome to come out Christmas morning and see them sitting under the tree (unwrapped of course). I also have good memories of going to the Rochester Hills Museum (a historic home near our house) every year and seeing Santa and Mrs. Claus!
  • What is on your Christmas wish list?
Ski stuff! Cam and I bought ski boots before we moved out of Colorado as Christmas gifts to each other, and then we also bought ski passes to the Heavenly Ski Resort out in Tahoe! (You can see my wish list here)
  • Do you open a gifts on Christmas Eve?
Growing up, we always got new pajamas and then we got to open one other present on Christmas after church before we went to bed.
  • How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
For the past few years, we’ve had white lights, brightly colored balls, and then an assortment of ornaments we’ve collected from our travels. As of now, we only do one tree, but I love the idea of having more than one/theme trees down the road. (You can see our tree from this year here)
  • Snow? Love it or dread it?
I have a love/hate relationship with snow. I love having it on Christmas and I do think that it’s so beautiful…but I absolutely loathe driving in it!
  • Real tree or fake tree?
Growing up, we always had a fake tree and I think artificial is totally fine…my husband is a die-hard real tree person, so that’s what we’ve had the past few years, and I actually really like it.
  • Do you remember your favorite gift?
It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, but the Kindle that I got last year is definitely up there. It’s so great for traveling!
  • What’s the most important thing about Christmas for you?
I love everything about the holidays–the lights, the baking, the decorations, the shopping, I truly enjoy it all! But the best part of Christmas is definitely spending time with family and friends and celebrating the gift of God’s love for us. I know it’s cliche saying, but Jesus truly is the reason for the season!
  • What is your favorite holiday dessert?
  • What is your favorite tradition?
Going to candlelight Christmas Eve church service, hands down. That point in the service where everyone’s candles are light, they turn the lights down and it’s just everyone’s voices singing Silent Night is just such an amazingly beautiful moment that’s really the culmination of the entire season for me. After all the (fun) running around and parties and to-do’s, just standing there in that peace of God’s presence totally focusing on why we’re celebrating is so awesome to me.
  • What tops your tree?
A gold star…I personally prefer a star to an angel.
  • Do you prefer giving or receiving?
I feel like I’m supposed to say that I just love giving, but gifts are my love language and so I truly enjoy both giving and receiving! I really appreciate when someone gives me a gift, it means a lot to me. But I also really love blessing the people I love and giving them gifts as well, it’s one of my favorite things about Christmas. I do think that this time of year is the season for giving, and I always love getting gifts for kids in need as well. This year Cam and I did Operation Christmas Child, but I’ve done other things like my church’s giving tree when we were growing up.
  • What is your favorite Christmas song?
I have a quite a few, I love Christmas music! For more pop, non-religious Christmas songs some of my favorites are The Christmas Waltz (Frank Sinatra’s version is classic, but the version on the new She and Him Christmas CD is also really good), Mariah’s All I Want for Christmas is You (love it), Nat King Cole’s version of The Christmas Song, and then I love all the Vince Guaraldi music from Charlie Brown. As far as my favorite Christmas carols, I love O Holy Night and Oh Come All Ye Faithful, but I really love them all.
  • Candy canes, yuck or yum?
LOVE. Since my birthday is the first day of December, I used to always bring in candy canes for my birthday treat every year at school. I’m a big fan of seasonal candy, and while I love eating candy corn in the fall and conversation hearts in February, candy canes are my absolute favorite! My favorite candy canes are the red and green stripe peppermint ones made my Spangler, they are the best. And they tasted great on the peppermint bark I made too!
  • Favorite Christmas movie?
It’s a Wonderful Life, with Elf being a close second.
(You can see a list of my favorite holiday movies here)
  • What do you leave for Santa?
Santa would get cookies and milk, and then carrots for the reindeer. I remember one year putting out the cookies and carrots, and then my sister (who was pretty young at the time) was like well maybe Santa needs a balloon to put on his sleigh (because we randomly had one in the house) and she’s like and maybe the reindeer want some other stuff to eat, and soon we had this big pile of all this random stuff sitting on the fireplace.
  • Do you have a Christmas morning tradition?
When we were young, we’d always have to wait until my dad was downstairs with the video camera before we could come down and open our presents, but we were never really super early risers, like a lot of times we’d sleep in on Christmas because my sister and I both loved to sleep in and we kind of figured the presents would be there when we got up! The past few Christmases we’ve been with Cam’s family, and everyone comes over in the morning and we all open our stockings and our presents.
  • Do you prefer to shop on-line or at the mall?
I usually do a combination, but I typically do more of my shopping in the stores versus online. I try to avoid the mall if I can, rather I like supporting more unique local small businesses and I try to do as much of my Christmas shopping in stores like that as I can.
  • Christmas letter or Christmas card?
My family always sent out a photo Christmas card growing, and it’s a tradition Cam and I are continuing in our own family. I like reading Christmas letters from other people, but we never did one growing up and I hadn’t done one until this year when I decided to put a little note on the back of our card to tell everyone about our move to Lake Tahoe at the beginning of 2012! (You can see our card from this year here)
So there are my Christmas memories, I think surveys like this are so much fun! It’s so interesting to me how everyone’s family celebrates a little bit differently and I love hearing about different traditions that people have! Feel free to use this survey on your own blog, and I’d love if you leave me a comment letting me know so I can go and read your answers! Xoxo
