I mentioned yesterday that Cam and I had some fun plans on the calendar…which is unusual for us for a Monday. But last night we ventured to Montbleu Casino for a special event…The Banff Film Festival!
I don’t know if you’re familiar with this event or not (I had never heard of it before Cam and I started dating and he made me go with him back in Ann Arbor, MI) so let me fill you in. Basically, every year in Banff, Alberta (a place I’d love to visit one day!) there is a film festival
that showcases short films primarily centered around adventure sports and the unifying theme is that they all have to have mountain content. Following the festival, the top films tour all around the world for screenings, and that’s what we attended last night. The films take place in the some of the world’s most breathtaking locations and the adrenline-packed action that’s captured in these films is honestly unbelievable. To give you a better idea of what I’m talking about, watch this clip:
That’s just a small glimpse of what going to a screening of the Banff Film Festival entails, but it truly makes you appreciate the beauty of our planet, as well as marvel at what the human body is capable of! There are 27 different films that were screened at this year’s festival, however, it’s up to the individual venue to decide which 10 or so they want to show at their screening. Last night we saw films about ice climbing, skiing, slacklining, paragliding, and traveling from Mongolia to Hungary in the path of Genghis Khan! <—(my favorite film of the night!) All the films were so well made, jam-packed with action and emotion, and I really enjoyed every single one.
The tickets are a little more pricey than your average movie (ours last night were $20 a piece), but it’s such a unique and inspiring event that I think it’s totally worth it. Cam and I have attended screenings in Ann Arbor, MI a few times, and then we attended last year in Greenville, SC. The films are in the process of touring the US right now, so check out the world tour schedule
to see if they’ll be in your city any time soon. If you’re thinking about going, my suggestion is get there early because every year I’ve gone the event always seems to fill up fast! Another cool thing about going to a screening is that they have local sponsors involved and often do giveaways before the show and during intermission.
The emcee for the show who was announcing the films was a lady from the Banff Centre in Alberta, and ironically she was the same person who was at the show in Greenville last year! One thing she said at the beginning of last night was “There are two groups of people–those who come to the Banff Film Festival World Tour every year and love it and those who’ve never heard of it. Once you go, you come back every year.” Totally true. You definitely need to be a part of the first category, go check this event out if it’s coming to your city…you won’t regret it!
Hope your week is off to a fantastic start friends! Xoxo
