June Staycation

TGIF everyone!

I felt like I was playing catch up all week with the holiday Monday and getting back from Chicago, and I really can’t believe it’s already Friday. And on top of that, I can’t believe it’s June! That’s craziness.

June feels like the real start of summer to me, and today I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want this summer to be like. I posted my summer to-do list earlier this week, and while there are a lot of fun places I’m hoping to go, most of all this summer I just want to relax and enjoy where we’re living right now.

Yeah, we live here.

Sometimes I forget that.

Cam and I are both fortunate enough to have jobs where we don’t have to work on the weekends, and because there are so many interesting things to see in this part of the country, it’s tempting to just pack up and hit the road every Friday. Our anniversary is next week and, originally, we were thinking to go out of town somewhere next weekend to celebrate. Last night we were eating dinner on our deck looking out at the mountains and talking about what to do when Cam brought up the novel concept of *gasp* just staying home.

And then it hit me, why are we scratching our heads trying to figure out where to go when we live in a place where lots of people come to get married/celebrate anniversaries?

The more we talked about it, the more we realized that’s what we both really wanted to do. To just sleep in and relax. Not to have to pack up the car, take the dog to the kennel, and drive for hours. But to just stay home. Eat breakfast on our deck. Go for a hike right outside our front door. Have a picnic by the lake. (It’s actually a little sad about how excited we were getting at the thought of just staying home–I think that’s a sign we might need to slow down a little bit!)

It’s definitely my personality to be on the go all the time; I love to travel and then combined with the fact that I work from home, I usually can’t wait to go somewhere on Friday afternoons. It’s easy for me to forget that I live in a place that people come to all the time for vacation. I don’t want to miss out on the experience of living here because we’re gone every weekend.

So that’s why we’re taking a June staycation.

We are going to be in town every weekend from now until the end of the month when we fly to Michigan. Staying in town for four consecutive weekends is a serious rariety for us, and I want to use this opportunity to soak up every bit of Tahoe summer that I can. I’m really looking forward to getting to know this beautiful area more, and just doing simple things like playing tennis. Getting ice cream. Going kayaking. Reading a book (and drinking wine) on my deck.

Simple pleasures.

I’m also hoping that by having a little slower paced weekends, we can have less chaotic weeks. When we’re out of town so much on the weekends, I sometimes feel so swamped M-F with work and just household things that get neglected because we’re gone. Hopefully by having more free time during the weekend to tackle some of these things, our weeknights will be more relaxing and allow me more time for things like trying out new recipes, reading, and blogging…yay!

I think that this June staycation is going to be a great way to get our summer off to an excellent start. I’m really excited because we’re kicking the month off by breaking in our new grill and having friends over for a barbeque tonight! I’m looking forward to some yummy food, good company, and a relaxing rest of the weekend!

Happy Friday and Happy Summer friends! Xoxo
