Mt. Hood Hike

The weather here in Oregon this month has been pretty fantastic, so Cameron and I are really trying to get out and enjoy it as much as possible. One of our favorite things to do together on the weekends is to go for a hike, and there are so many fantastic trails within a short drive of Portland that we really want to take advantage of it! This weekend, we were debating between doing a hike out by Mt. Hood or going to do a hike in the Columbia River Gorge; in the end, Mt. Hood won out because we figured the trails near it will be covered in snow soon whereas the Gorge can be hiked pretty much all year. (Plus, you can see Mt. Hood from our apartment…which I’ll hopefully be sharing photos of soon!)
After a little research in our 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles of Portland book, we decided to do the McNeil Point hike. The weather was pretty foggy when we left Portland, but it cleared up quickly and turned out to be a beautiful day! The hike is supposed to be about 10 miles out and back; unfortunately we weren’t able to make it all the way to the McNeil Point Shelter due to snow. However, we ended up taking a wrong turn early into the hike and going down a different section of trail for awhile…and with having to backtrack, that little detour probably added 2 miles or so. It was absolutely perfect weather for a hike though, here are some of my favorite photos from the day!
Starting off our hike…the light in the morning was stunning!
Smiling to cover up my frustration over the fact that we went the wrong way 🙂
Once we were finally on the right trail, this hike got really amazing really quickly because of the super dramatic views it offered of Mt. Hood!

Happy pup!

Yes, I realize this post is photo overload–but can you blame me?!

Once we got a little farther down the trail, we came across some snow!
 Lola was thrilled 🙂
One of my other favorite things we passed on the trail was this gorgeous waterfall…
I love how lush and green it is!
After hiking in the woods for awhile, we finally emerged on this incredible view of Mt. Hood, surrounded by snow! It was truly breathtaking!
 Love this picture!
Lola looks really mad about something…ha.

The Pacific Northwest is pretty beautiful 🙂
There’s no better way to spend an October afternoon than out in nature, breathing in the mountain air and soaking up the sunshine! I’m really glad we did this hike, and I’m hoping we’ll be able to do another one this upcoming weekend!
