It’s Christmastime in the City

One of the things I’ve enjoyed most so far about living in downtown Portland is getting to experience Christmas in a city. While I loved our cozy mountain Christmas in Tahoe last year, there’s just something really special about the hustle and bustle and twinkling lights of a city during this time of year. Granted, Portland isn’t a huge city and doesn’t decorate for Christmas on a NYC level or anything, but I’ve discovered that they still celebrate the season here in their own unique way.

This weekend we did some Christmas shopping…on foot! I really love that we can walk to so many different stores from our apartment, it’s super convenient!
Pioneer Square (which is the center of downtown) has a giant Christmas tree set up for the holidays.
It’s pretty during the day…
…but it’s even more gorgeous at night!

I walk by it all the time, but it never gets old! I love the colored lights πŸ™‚

There have been a bunch of different holiday events happening in Pioneer Square lately…because after all, nothing says Christmas in Oregon like a bunch of carolers in the rain πŸ™‚
Shoppers out and about on a rainy night in Portland πŸ™‚

Because we’re leaving for our trip this weekend, we opted not to get a tree this year.
However, I tried to make our apartment a little more merry and bright where I could!

And how can I forget the most festive part of our apartment?

This week, we’ve been busy wrapping gifts, but we pretty much have everything done!

And of course, you can’t wrap presents without hot chocolate!

This hot chocolate from Quin is AWESOME.
It comes with these amazing vanilla bean marshmallows that are incredible.
I’d highly suggest it if you’re looking for a last-minute gift for someone in Portland!
(Plus, I just love everything from Quin – awesome candy and great branding!)

Speaking of gifts, one of my goals for Christmas this year was to try to shop locally as much as possible. I was originally going to try and do a gift guide with some Oregon-made products, but ran out of time…maybe next year! (If you’re interested, Portland Monthly put together a great one though!) However, this weekend Cam and I were able to check out a couple different holiday fairs that featured handmade items, and it was a really fun way to do some shopping!

ADX is a space in Portland where you can make stuff.
You can read more about it here, but it’s a really awesome concept!
They had a holiday gift fair that we stopped by on Friday night – it was smaller, but had some interesting stuff and it was fun to look around.

Sunday, we went to Crafty Wonderland’s Super Colossal Holiday Sale at the Convention Center and it was AWESOME! (And to be as much of a Portland clichΓ© as possible, we even took public transportation to get there and brought reusable bags with us…ha!) The event was free to the public and featured over 250 different artists selling handmade goods…so basically picture Etsy come to life! They had tons of really cute items, and I’d definitely go back next year!

And yes, there were cat bow ties for sale from a vendor called Business Catual.
Like I said, it was awesome and you should totally go next year.

Another Portland-y Christmas thing we’ve done recently is to go see the lights at Peacock Lane! I first went to Peacock Lane with Cam and his parents a couple of years ago; it’s a little street in Southeast Portland where everyone decorates their houses with lights. People go and walk around and it’s just a fun thing to do during the holidays. What I like about it is that even though it’s really popular, it’s still pretty low-key. Yes, some people put more lights on their house than others, but overall, it’s just kind of quaint and cute and I think it’s awesome that it’s been going on for almost 100 years!

Finally, last night we went to see The Nutcracker at Keller Auditorium! I love going to see it around the holidays and I really wanted to go last year, but we didn’t end up having time. Cam had never been before so it was a lot of fun for him for me. I just adore the music and the dancing!

I know I probably sound like a broken record at this point, but I really do love Portland πŸ™‚
I had hoped to finish my Portland page this week, but it will have to wait until next year!
(In case you missed it, check out my giant restaurant review from earlier this week!)

Even though this Christmas season has been short, I feel like we’ve tried our best to enjoy it as much as possible! (And we’ve actually done a majority of the things on my list – woo!)
I hope that so far everyone has been having a great holiday as well!
